Goodness gracious! This mid 60s Fender Telecaster might be a mutt of sorts, but when it comes to tone and playability, it's everything you want in an old tele and more!
We're not totally sure of the backstory, but what we do know is that this c. 1967 Telecaster body was stripped of its original Olympic White finish and lightly stained natural in some sort of satin shellac or lacquer. The Alder body shows typical tooling marks and routs associated with the period, and with the raised string ferrules places it no earlier than '67.
It somehow ended up being paired with an even rarer neck than when it likely left the factory - an early 1965 Fender Custom Telecaster neck! This neck would've accompanied a double bound body originally, but here is bolted up with a slightly younger "standard" body. The Maple has light specs of Birdseye in some areas and a beautifully aged (and dark) Rosewood fingerboard. It measures a bit slim in the first position but feels very much in line with telecaster necks we've handled from this period, with a nice rounded/oval C carve.
The hardware and electronics all appear original to the body with the exception of the neck plate, which dates more like 1966 than 1967. The pickups sound phenomenal, particularly the bridge pickup. It's very rich sounding with the perfect balance of cut and body that make it really stand out. This tele is a rock and roll machine! The harness shows two period-correct 250k CTS pots that date from the 42nd week of 1966 along with and older switch. It's rewired in the modern configuration (no dark circuit here) as well.
The pickguard also dates from the mid 60s and has an added screw hole on the treble side waist as well as some material removed from where it meets the control plate. It's otherwise crack-free despite some evidence of shrinkage around some of the screw holes. The bridge is the proper Pat # variety with original threaded saddles and remains in great shape.
At just over 7lbs, it's a wonderfully balanced and comfortable tele with great natural acoustic resonance. It was refretted in our shop with Jescar 40080 wire to keep it feeling and playing like a factory fresh 60s Fender.
