Product information

Rare, 1 3/16" wide-neck version of the venerable Collings MF-5 Varnish - this one has some serious pop!

We remember when Bill Collings first introduced the MF5 model mandolin. He was up for one of his near-annual visits to the store, and his excitement was palpable. As the MF5's voicing was still evolving in those early days, Bill was eager to show of what the Collings team had achieved, and actively soliciting feedback. The model would go on to raise the bar for the modern F-style mandolin. In the ensuing years, Collings would introduce the varnish-finished variant and offer a wide-neck option, both features of this build.

In many ways, this MF5-V Italian represents the evolution of the Collings' vision: top-shelf tonewoods, second-to-none craftsmanship, superb playability, and most important of all, Collings' signature tone and powerful, articulate projection. The mass in that slightly wider neck does translate sonically as this mandolin has excellent body and a throaty, powerful chop.
