Product information

With a gorgeous Mahogany top, classy parallelogram inlays, and first-ever Ron Thorn GT-90 pickups, this City Limits tips its cap to a certain 50s "Black Beauty" with Collings' touch.

Over the past few years, we've looked at ways where we could give reverence to vintage guitars through the modern lens of Collings craftsmanship. Whether it's just a classic model with a classic look, or an artist-owned six-string with a unique identity, there's something about having a new guitar in your hand that pays homage to the past without feeling like it's derivative of, or just a straight up copy. Needless to say, the folks at Collings get us...

This brand new City Limits was spec'ed out recently after handling a really vibey mid 50s player-grade Les Paul Custom Black Beauty. We were inspired to explore the idea of the whole "what if?" scenario of uncovering an otherwise painted Mahogany body. The same kind of experience happens to those who strip off bad refins or old goldtop finishes off of vintage LPs - is there some majorly flamed out Maple hiding under there???

While there's no flamey Maple hiding underneath those original 50s Black Beauties, the all-Mahogany construction still presents incredibly well in its own rite. Case in point with the Mahogany Collings used in this build. It's got some nice straight ribbon grain on the top and body, where the uniformity gives it a more understated look while still showing off the quality of the wood.

This is the second iteration of this build, and represents the first-ever Collings electric to leave the factory with Ron Thorn pickups! These GT-90 staple polepiece single coils have been very highly regarded for years in Ron's own guitars, and we thought they'd make a perfect match in this CL. They do not disappoint!

In true "staple" fashion, they have a psuedo hi-fi tone - almost Dynasonic-like - with very clear chimey top end and an overall enhanced clarity. For those clean tone players, they absolutely shine. No mud, great definition, and lots of range in the volume and tone controls. For those looking to rock a bit more, rest assured these are just as impressive into a gained up amp. They cut through a mix with precision, and have amazing dynamic response that allow the player to control how aggressive they can be with their right hand attack.

This isn't a spec you're sure to come across every day, and we love that about this CL! Guitars like this continue to inspire us to explore more builds with that in mind.
