Martin D-28 (1956)

This 1956 Martin D-28 has just come into the shop for consignment! It was last sold by TME in its nascent Pittsburgh era (approximately 1969); and it's been with the same owner ever since that time. Its condition is detailed in the next paragraph, so let's focus on the positive! Interested in tone? Read on. This is a very warm-sounding D-28, with impressive low end for a 1950's model and a beautiful, lush note backdrop. It's crisp and punchy, as you'd expect a straight-braced guitar to be when you dig into single notes with a flatpick, but it also displays the beautiful "blended" voice quality that makes it a great candidate to anchor a bluegrass band. What's more, a couple neatly-executed modifications keep it in player-grade territory.

Condition: this guitar is in very fine shape for a nearly-70-year-old D-28. Its structure is solid and only shows one small back crack. The finish is original throughout, and shows the expected checking alongside various pick scrapes, scratches, and dings, with a small area of wear exposing bare wood along the treble edge of the pickguard. An old clear plastic pickguard installed above the soundhole has been removed, leaving the outline seen in our photos. The bridge and bridge plate have been replaced (the bridge is from TJ Thompson's shop, the bridge plate is rosewood and was installed sometime in the early 1970's). The neck has been reset in our shop; and the guitar plays easily with action at 3/32" (bass side) and 2/32" treble side and minimal relief. Priced with 1970's Martin hard case.
