Ron Thorn’s reintroduced SoCal G/T combines his Fender Masterbuilder pedigree with timeless Thorn design, delivering incredible sustain, refined playability, and an old-soul vibe.
By popular demand, Ron Thorn has reintroduced the SoCal G/T with a stunning refresh that elevates every detail and we are absolutely here for it! Starting with the refined body shape first showcased on his engraved-plated Thorns, this model balances comfort and style with ease - and, yes, it’s just gorgeous in person (and pics).
This new chapter of Thorn guitars arrives after Ron’s celebrated tenure as a Masterbuilder and Head of the Fender Custom Shop, where his reputation for precision and artistry only deepened. That experience shows here: the SoCal G/T has a stout, rock-solid feel that translates to copious sustain and punch. It’s at once refined and effortless to play, yet still channels the old-soul vibe that players crave in a great instrument.
Finished in a lightly aged Tobacco Burst nitro-lacquer over a one-piece Swamp Ash body, this G/T is paired with a beautifully figured 3A Birdseye Maple neck ('53 C profile measuring .87-.96") and a luxurious (inlayed!) East Indian Rosewood fretboard. Elegant grained ivoroid binding, pickguard, inlays, and pickup cover inserts heighten its visual appeal.
Hardware choices highlight Ron’s meticulous eye for performance: a compensated Thorn Brass Knuckle single-piece saddle set into a custom notched bridge plate, locking tuners (no string tree required), and a sleek custom control plate that put the controls in the perfect spot for manipulation.
Ron’s own sought-after / hand-wound GT-90 Staple Top neck pickup and GT-90T bridge pickup deliver the heat - clear, fat, punchy, and an incredibly expressive dynamic range. Just amazing stuff whether clean or overdriven.
In short, the reintroduced SoCal G/T is everything we love about Thorn guitars: elegantly detailed, sonically commanding, and built to inspire.
