We're not gonna lie... we're LOVING the look of this 1980 Gibson Les Paul Custom that recently came in from its longtime owner!
We often think of Black or White when it comes to Customs, but there's something about a Tobacco Sunburst on this model that exudes a certain class and traditional vibe that is very much Gibson but still has some extra personality. Maybe it's the fact that the entire guitar is bursted? Maybe is that combination of the finish with gold hardware? It could just be all of the above.
Just barely starting to sneak into the Vintage category, this '80 seems like it's probably from earlier in the year based off of pot codes that are dated in early/mid '79. It's got all the hallmarks of a late 70s Custom - the 3-Piece Maple neck and Tim Shaw Era Patent # humbuckers, the Schaller tuners, and the Nashville TOM bridge.
It has a fat and punchy tone with very nice top end, and the Slim C neck with fat taper and original frets has a nice, fast feel. Though these frets were never super tall to begin with, our repair staff performed a nice level, crown, and polish to restore playability up and down the neck.
With just a few changes of note - replaced knobs, strap button (slightly relocated due to a broken screw), and an input jack plate - this is what we'd consider a very clean example that survived a period of DiMarzio hot rodding and ultra jumbo refrets! It's even got its clean and original Protector case.
