Product information

1966 Gretsch Country Gentleman in original Walnut finish just into the shop!

Co-designed with the legendary Chet Atkins, the Gretsch Country Gentleman has long been celebrated as one of the New York builder's crowning achievements in hollowbody electric guitar design.

The mid-60s brought forth a few changes for the model, most notably in the pickup department. Gretsch transitioned from a matched pair of Filter'trons to a a split set- a Super-tron blade pickup in the neck position and a Filter'tron in the bridge. The leaner, smoother Super'tron works really well in the neck position for keeping things clear/open, and that signature punchy twang from the Filter'tron remains.

We acquired this guitar from an older gentleman who'd owned it for decades. It had some of the common binding issues on the fingerboard and body, worn out frets, and the original mute system had been removed and closed up. Still, we saw promise in bringing a 60s Gretsch back to life, as many of them produce an unmistakable sound that modern versions can't quite replicate.

It's got a fresh refret with Jescar 47095 fretwire courtesy of Glenn Nichols, and aforementioned binding issues were repaired in-house at the same time. We cleaned up some of the electronics and dialed in the setup, and it's now playing beautifully! The slightly larger frets feel right at home on the full C neck.

There's evidence of some ancient decals where you can see some shadow/silhouette marks in the right light, but the Walnut finish helps to mask much of it. There's a missing pickup ring screw where the laminated Maple top rout couldn't support screw threads, but it's held on well by the remaining screws.

It's no pageant prize winner, but if vintage tone and feel is at the top of your want list, this Country Gent is a worthy choice.
