Tube-driven spring reverb and pitch-shifting vibrato in one lightweight 1x12 combo

1962 Magnatone Custom 440 1x12 combo built by Estey in California.

The Custom 440 might be an underrated vintage amp among the general public, but among those who are familiar with Magnatone's amp lineup know just how special this combo is.

Combining tube-driven spring reverb and pitch-shifting vibrato with a tube-rectified twin 6V6 power section puts the 440 right in the mix with the likes of Fender's Princeton Reverb and Deluxe Reverb.

The 440 definitely leans into the sweeter side of the tonal spectrum, especially when compared to its 213/413 brethren. It's a less aggressive sounding amplifier when pushed, but also takes overdrive pedals very well. The reverb can go from light and airy to ethereal and almost cavernous, with less bounce and more wash, if that makes sense.

And of course, we can't forget the vibrato. It's what sells these amps, ultimately. When you get it going with the reverb, however, it's where the 440 separates itself from many of its contemporaries.

The amp was recently serviced by Stan Day, which included its first recap along with replacement of some tubes. A new power cord was installed as well.

**Please Note: All vintage amplifiers - regardless of service history - contain electronic components that will eventually require replacement or repair. This is often unpredictable and should be expected as a vintage amplifier owner. We are not responsible for additional service upon receipt. We also do not guarantee tube life.**
