Thomas Rodriguez delivers some late '50s Gibson magic with this Korina body Buxton Special.

Released alongside the student model single-pickup Coronet in 1958, the solid-body Crestwood - Thomas Rodriguez calls this semi-hollow version the Buxton Special - represents the higher-end of the two solidbody models Gibson introduced under their newly acquired brand. Think of the Coronet like a Les Paul Junior and its bigger brother Crestwood like a Les Paul Standard. Gibson manufactured these first version solidbodies in very low numbers, which has factored into their relative rarity and general lack of familiarity among even the most astute vintage electric aficionados. At their core, they represent a unique take on a timeless recipe that made legends out of the Les Paul, SG, and many more mahogany body Gibson electrics.

Why We Love This

Not to gush here, but these are simply remarkable guitars (one look at this thing will tell you that, but that's why you're here, right?). Made "the old-fashioned way", meaning, no CNC happening here, it's all by hand. When you zoom out for a second and consider the number of skills a builder like Thomas Rodriguez - ie, a single builder shop - has to master in order to make instruments of this caliber, it's astounding. Design. Woodworking. Fretwork. Finishing. Etc..etc...

The reason why all this matters is that you will end up owning a truly special instrument when it's made by one (exceptionally talented) person. It's one that possesses vibe and musicality like a beloved instrument that's been around for the last 50 years. This is the type of guitar we like to call a "lifer" - you will treasure this instrument for the rest of your days and likely stop looking for a twin humbucker, set-neck guitar.

Think we're laying it on a little thick? We totally get that - but - we’re really lucky to regularly play the best-of-the-best, vintage or boutique, and you simply know it when you encounter it. Give this beauty a try and we think you'll agree - this Buxton Special might just end your search.
