We are absolutely overjoyed to present to you this incredible one-owner 1982 D'Aquisto "Solidbody" Custom!

It's not every day that a guitar of this pedigree - vintage or otherwise - walks through our doors here. Few builders have earned an elite-level status quite like Jimmy D'Aquisto, famed protege/apprentice of John D'Angelico.

Much like D'Angelico, D'Aquisto instruments were built on a custom basis with Jimmy working directly with his customers. Each instrument has its own unique touch- whether by the request of the customer, or by Jimmy himself- to give it the personality and sound that is most befitting to its end user. Turns out that no matter how personalized the spec was, Jimmy built transcendently great instruments that would have a profound impact on the guitar world. That is the mark of a true master craftsman.

It probably comes as no surprise that this "Solidbody" Custom is one of the rarest models/styles that came out of D'Aquisto's shop in his near 30 year long tenure. It's estimated that models like this very guitar made up less than 10% of his total production of approximately 370 instruments.

For the sake of clarity, this is actually a chambered semi-hollow electric. It's a "hollow solid" of sorts, as referenced over the years amongst D'Aquisto owners and afficionados. The lack of f-holes along with the use of solid woods in a slim-bodied format might suggest otherwise, but Jimmy did incorporate a combination of weight relief and acoustic voicing in this style of build, and it's immediately noticeable upon playing it.

It's outfitted with an original set of T.W. Doyle humbuckers, designed and built by New Jersey native Tom Doyle. Jimmy recommended these pickups to the owner, and having seen these pickups in other D'Aquistos, it was clear that he had a great working relationship with Tom and found their voicing to suit his builds quite well. With a varitone circuit integrated into the electronics along with phase and coil split switches, it's about as versatile a configuration as you'll find in a D'Aquisto. The pickups provide a clear, smooth response with lots of range and control. Traditional jazz and blues to fusion seem easily accessible with minor control adjustments.

The neck is made of a single piece of Maple, and in all likelihood from the same batch of woods used in the construction of the body. It features a 1 3/4" nut width with a slim tapered D neck carve, bound with an Ebony fingerboard that's inlaid with large pearl block markers. The headstock features the wide flare open scroll top found on many of Jimmy's guitars, with a scrolled pearl inlay in the center and the D'Aquisto named scripted inside. The headstock is fully bound with purfling as well.

The original owner, a lifelong professional musician who is local to the Boston area, consulted with Jimmy in 1979 to begin building this very guitar. It was a three-year long process, and as the story is told, Jimmy upgraded the wood set to German violin-grade Maple to make up for the lengthy build time. The top is made of a gorgeous slab of carved one-piece Maple, with the body being a bookmatched carved billet of Maple. A control plate was routed out of the Maple, allowing for easy access to the electronics/wiring.

The guitar has seen its fair share of use throughout the years; used, but never abused. There are various small light dings, nicks, and scratches, primarily on the body edges and headstock area. There's some light buckle rash on the back of the body as well, and some light fret wear that we cleaned up a bit for a smoother playing experience. There's a slight amount of binding separation on the bass-side waist that doesn't appear to be moving, so we've elected to leave it as-is.

The guitar includes its original bill of sale, written by Jimmy on his letterhead to the owner, along with the original T.W. Doyle pickup paperwork/manual.

It's an incredibly special piece of guitar history, with ironclad provenance and a rarity in its spec that pushes the boundaries of what it means to have a one-of-a-kind instrument from one of the most legendary builders of all-time.
