The T-Deluxe is a killer Tele-style guitar for folks looking to buck tradition.
Bill Asher's T-Deluxe model is one of our all-time favorite Asher designs, and we love what he's done with this beautifully understated 2018 version made from 50,000 year old, ancient New Zealand Kauri wood.
Yep, you read that right - 50,000 year old wood was used for the body and neck of this T Deluxe. In and of itself, the idea of using wood that is that old is incredibly compelling, but more importantly, you feel the difference this wood makes when playing. It's akin to what the 'roasting' process achieves when builders utilize torrefied woods in their builds (it feels incredibly dry, seasoned, and ultimately, resonant/lively/snappy).
Using the legendary Fender T-style guitars as a leaping off point, Bill has really put his own spin on this style of guitar with the T Deluxe design. The offset body balances beautifully and the overall feel of the T-Deluxe is more deluxe than your average Telecaster.
Why We Love This
What does remain is the versatility of a great Tele, though Bill has even pushed that further than the originals with his choice of Vintage Vibe's wonderful T-Blade pickups and a volume/tone bypass & midrange filter knob.
Played acoustically, this guitar has an incredible liveliness and snap. The D shaped neck carve and 12" radius neck feels incredible - gently broken-in, with a nod toward modern playability (given the radius).
The T Blade bridge pickup delivers P90-meets-Tele tones with abundant Tele snap and twang crossed with the forward, aggressive-when-you-want-it-midrange of a great P90. The neck pickup reminds us quite a bit of a great Strat neck pickup, achieving its fullness and warmth via a scooped midrange yet still retaining a nice, clear treble that never gets muddy.
