Product information

The '59 experience is alive and well in this killer Cherry ES-335.

A Cherry Red ES-335 from 1959, you say?!?

While not a factory original paint job, this amazing 335 was sent back to Gibson at one point and received this gorgeous Cherry Red finish you see before you.

Rest assured that the guitar remains almost entirely original throughout, including the fabulous sounding PAFs, wiring harness, no-wire ABR-1 and short seam tailpiece. The knobs are period-correct Reflectors, likely installed to complement the "new" finish, but the goods are all there where it truly counts.

Like many 335s from '59, this guitar has a beautiful, warm acoustic voice and the sort of "bounce" they seem to exhibit in their response. There's a combination of smooth archtop-like bloom to the notes and a more authoritative quickness to the attack that a proper stopbar semi-hollow can impart.

There's an unmistakable clarity with the PAFs that is never harsh, and that goes for clean tones through an old Princeton Reverb up to searing gain via an old Marshall or equivalent. It's what makes these guitars so desirable- they're perhaps the closest thing to a swiss army knife as you'll encounter in a vintage Gibson electric.

The guitar is outfitted with a reproduction set of Kluson tuners, with the original single line Klusons tucked away in the case due to button degradation. We identified two replaced bobbin screws on the bridge PAF baseplate, but there appears to be no additional modification to the pickups, and both stickers blacklight properly.

The most obvious sign of the suspected factory refinish work can be linked to the non-original die stamp serial number impressed into the back of the headstock. Interestingly, it reads "A 318224", which has the added '8' for a unknown reason. An oversight on serialization, perhaps? It's not an answer we're privy to, but it doesn't seem to be adding to or detracting from the guitar's tone ;)

If you like the idea of being one of the only players with a Cherry Red '59 335 while saving yourself a chunk of money in the process, we'd like to think your search would end right here.
