Deimel's Singlestar steps up a size with the XL model! Its archtop-like silhouette combines with semi-hollow construction for one inspiring electric!

One of the newer offerings from Deimiel's lineup is the Singlestar XL. It's essentially a larger version of their Singlestar, but with a different approach in terms of its construction. We can certainly say that for # 011, anyway.

Featuring a semi-hollow Honduran Mahogany body with a carved solid Alpine Spruce top and elegant Ebony accents on the forearm edge and cutaway, it presents almost like a thinline archtop. Also, check out the custom made Ebony pickup covers- how awesome is that?!

Sonically, however, it seems to move fluidly between both traditional and modern-day semi-hollow electric design. The acoustic response is very sweet and woody, but there's an immediacy to its attack and fundamental definition that would make you think you're stepping into the world of mid 50s wraptail Gibson LPs. That little extra zing on top complements the depth of tone so well, and that's not even inclusive of what's happening when you plug in.

It's clear with # 011 that the intention was to keep this build as stripped down as possible. The XL demands it in a way. You have a larger body capable of supporting all kinds of ingenious Deimel innovations, but the style suggests the opposite to a degree. There's an elegance in its simplicity, and we loved the idea of highlighting the tonewoods and the craftsmanship that went into achieving such a stunning looking, feeling, and sounding guitar.

A pair of handwound BlendBuckers are the perfect match for this model. The ability to go from full, rich jazz and blues tones, to snappy, punchy rock tones (even copping some Gretsch-like twang in the process) is surprising. It goes to show that looks can certainly be deceiving! The control layout is minimalist- a master volume, master tone, and master blend knob is all you need here! The fully adjustable ABM wraptail keeps in line with said minimalist approach, too.

This Singlestar XL is unlike anything we've had in the shop before, and that's really saying something. Simple, striking, attention-grabbing but not gaudy, with just the right amount of aesthetic touches to remind you who built it and where it came from. It's an incredibly inspiring instrument, and who better than Deimel to show us the true breadth of their capabilities as premier instrument builders?!
