2025 Year End Review
December 31, 2025 | Eliot Hunt
As 2025 draws to a close, we find ourselves in that familiar rhythm - pausing for a beat to reflect, before the downbeat of a brand new year. And what a year it’s been at The Music Emporium.
Stu Cohen
Gabe Hirshfeld
The year began with a profound loss: the passing of The Music Emporium's founder, Stu Cohen, on January 11th. Stu’s vision and deep love for acoustic instruments laid the foundation for everything we do. His spirit continues to resonate through every note played within these walls, and through the community he helped build - one rooted in passion, curiosity, and connection. We miss him dearly, and carry his legacy forward with pride and gratitude.
In the final days of December, we were heartbroken to learn of another tremendous loss to our community: Gabe Hirshfeld. An extraordinary banjo player and a dear friend of the shop, Gabe was a true fixture in Boston’s bluegrass scene. His humor, heart, and unmistakable musical voice left a mark on everyone who knew him, and he will be missed by many.
In 2025, one theme echoed louder than any other: community. Not just the number of players we’ve met, but the depth of passion we’ve witnessed. The joy. The curiosity. The shared reverence for instruments that have stories to tell, the people who make them, and the musicians who bring them to life.
From lifelong collectors and hobbyists on the hunt for “the one,” to touring musicians just passing through and legends who made surprise appearances, 2025 reminded us how special our little corner of the musical world truly is.
Every interaction, every email, every in-person visit shaped our year. Whether you joined us for the first time, subscribed to our YouTube channel, or simply shared a love of tone and timber in conversation - it meant something. And it still does.
If there's one thing we’ve learned over and over again this year, it’s that music has a way of bringing people together across styles, skill levels, and stories. You don’t need to be famous to be part of this community - you just need to care about the sound you make, and the joy it brings.
So here’s to Stu. To Gabe. To the instruments that inspire us, the artists who give them life, and to you - our community - for making The Music Emporium a place where great music and great stories continue to thrive.
We’re deeply grateful to be part of your musical journey.
It was an honor to welcome Lyle Lovett and his phenomenal band to the shop back in May.
Getting to share our space - and our instruments - with artists of this caliber is always special, and we’re grateful for the visit.
Think Lyle found one he loves...
I couldn't resist asking legendary bassist, Lee Sklar, to do "the photo" with him - I mean, you have to, right? Not everyday you run into a player of his caliber with such a hilarious tradition of giving the finger in pics. There's an amazing book of photos with Lee doing this shot with tons of iconic musicians - check it out here. And, yes, he's as cool in person as you think he'd be.
A true legend in the shop - Sergio Vallín of Mana stopped by TME and left with a mandolin in hand. Staff superfans Ian and Diego were honored to get a photo with one of their guitar heroes.
We were excited to welcome Chris Benson of Benson Amplifiers to the shop and spend some time talking tone. It’s always inspiring to connect with the minds behind the gear we love. Speaking of which, we can’t wait for our next batch of Benson amps to arrive (which should be very soon!).
Gathered Around the Music: Intimate Events That Brought Us Together
There’s a certain kind of magic that happens when music fills a space - not from a screen or a stream - but from a player just a few feet away. That kind of magic lives at the heart of The Music Emporium, and has since the very beginning.
Since 1968, our walls have held the sound of impromptu jams, quietly transcendent solo sets, and community gatherings that remind us why we fell in love with this stuff in the first place. Our showroom may seat 50 to 60, but when the music starts, it feels like the whole world disappears.
From planned concerts to spontaneous moments sparked by customers who just need to play, these gatherings are the soul of the shop. And with events like our growing Electric Guitarist Meetups, the tradition only keeps expanding. Below are some of the events we hosted this year, and we're already busy planning new events for 2026 (so make sure you're on our mailing list).
Because when musicians gather, something real happens - and we’re lucky to witness it, week after week.

Are We Not TME?
October 9th, 2025
We had an unforgettable night at the shop with master luthier Ron Thorn - founder of Thorn Guitars and former Fender Custom Shop Masterbuilder - alongside Josh Hager of DEVO.
Guests got a first look at several unreleased Thorn models, had the chance to play an incredible lineup of guitars, and heard Ron share insights into his building process and creative partnership with Josh. A few lucky attendees went home with some stellar giveaways, including Thorn’s reissued pickups and his Brass Knuckle bridges.

Behind Every Note: A Thank You to Our Demo Artists

Per Marklund
It started with a 1937 D-18.
While visiting a local shop, a young Per Marklund was handed a well-loved pre-war Martin. He couldn’t afford to take it home—he was a student at the time—but the sound never left him. The warmth, the response, the soul of it lit a spark.
When he couldn’t find that sound again, he decided to build it.
A visit to a design teacher, a meeting with a student luthier, a stack of tonewood from a local store—that’s how his first guitar came to life. That was 2011. Today, Marklund Guitars are played around the world, each one chasing that same unforgettable tone.
Rooted in tradition but never bound by it, Marklund’s instruments nod to the golden era while speaking in a voice all their own. We’re proud to share them with you.
Bayard Mandolins
From antique hand tools passed down through generations to a working musician’s ear tuned for tone, Bayard Blain's instruments are built with players at the center.

We represent Bayard because his work reflects everything we value: soul, precision, and a deep commitment to sound, feel, and musical connection.

Timeless Tone: A Look Back at Vintage in 2025
One of the most meaningful parts of what we do at The Music Emporium is the privilege of working with vintage instruments, and in 2025, that part of the business continued to grow in exciting ways.
This year, we were fortunate to offer some truly remarkable vintage pieces - guitars and mandolins that are more than just instruments; they’re living history. Some came to us from the pre-rock ‘n’ roll era. Others have stories that stretch back before the Second World War… even before the automobile first rolled down the street. To experience those instruments up close is to feel the past in your hands - notes still echoing from decades (sometimes more than a century) ago.
Whether it’s a golden-era flattop, a well-traveled archtop, or a wartime oddity that somehow survived in stunning condition, each piece offers something unique. And every time we lift a case lid, we’re reminded that this never gets old. The patina, the play wear, the smell of old wood and lacquer, it’s endlessly fascinating, and never taken for granted.
We’re deeply grateful to the collectors, players, and fellow obsessives who helped make 2025 such a memorable year for vintage at the shop. Thank you for trusting us to source, share, and steward these iconic instruments. We can’t wait to see what treasures the new year will bring.
Below is a small selection of some of our faves...
Onwards and Upwards
As 2025 winds down, we’re already looking ahead to exciting things in the new year. To support the continued growth of our shop and community, we’ve created a new space just a few doors down from our main showroom - dedicated entirely to the electric side of what we do. You'll still find the majority of our electric inventory at our main showroom, but it'll be great to have a second space to share with you.
This new room will feature private shopping appointments (details coming soon), amp demo space, and a curated spotlight on our vast Fender Custom Shop inventory. As a Showcase-level Fender dealer, we’re proud to give electric players a space where they can plug in, explore, and get inspired.
We can’t wait to welcome you into the new space in 2026. Until then, thank you for a great year - and Happy New Year from all of us at TME!
