Supro 1690T Coronado (1960)
Vintage
Perhaps the most well-known Supro model in existence, the 1690T Coronado was a core element of Jimmy Page's electric guitar tone in the studio. Paired with his Telecaster, he famously cut tracks for 'Stairway To Heaven' with said rig. Although Jimmy's Coronado had been modified for a single 12" speaker, there's no doubt that when plugging into this amplifier, you're rewarded with a lot of those great tonal characteristics heard on that iconic song and on Zeppelin's first record.
This Coronado was acquired by a local gentleman alongside a similarly aged 1696TN, a sibling amplifier of sorts. It was clear that it had sat for an extended period of time without use, though it was wholly original with the exception of the speakers. No modifications were identified in the circuitry, and the original transformers were healthy.
After a visit to our local amp doctor, Stan Day, this Coronado jumped right back into action. A fresh pair of Alessandro GA-10SC64 ceramic 10" speakers and strong 5881 power tubes re-established the punch and sizzle this circuit is known for. Stan gave the amp a nice spa treatment as well, cleaning up the original two-tone vinyl covering and cleaning all the mechanical contacts (jacks, tube sockets, switches).
Tight and punchy with a little extra focus via those two 10" speakers, this cathode-biased combo goes from clear low volume cleans to fat midrange-forward overdrive with a simple twist of the volume control. The tone stack is simple yet effective, with a master tone control responsible for dialing in voicing for each channel. The tremolo circuit is wonderful, too!
Finding some of these earlier turn-of-the-century Coronados in undisturbed shape is getting harder and harder. Whether you're hungry for that early LZ guitar tone, or just looking to add a unique vintage tube amp to your lineup, a top-of-the-line Supro 1690T like this seems like an easy choice.
**Please Note: All vintage amplifiers - regardless of service history - contain electronic components that will eventually require replacement or repair. This is often unpredictable and should be expected as a vintage amplifier owner. We are not responsible for additional service upon receipt. We also do not guarantee tube life.**
