When a builder of Ron Thorn's caliber swings for the fences, the results tend to be extraordinary. This Florentine is, to our ears and eyes, extraordinary, and, a future classic - the kind of guitar that'll be chased fifty years from now the way players chase vintage D'Angelicos and D'Aquistos today.

If Ron's name is new to you, a quick primer: he started Thorn Custom Inlay in 1996, which became the exclusive inlay supplier to the Fender Custom Shop and remains so. Thorn Guitars followed in 2000, building a reputation for electrics that blend traditional elegance with obsessive attention to detail. CNC used as a craftsman's tool, not a shortcut. After a stretch as a Fender Custom Shop Masterbuilder and eventually head of the Custom Shop, Ron returned to his own bench, and his current model lineup shows him at the top of his game.

The evidence is in every detail here. A one-piece korina body, chambered semi-hollow, wears a carved (top and underside) quilt maple top finished in a warm Faded Amber Burst nitro, done NOS-style - just a clean modern build meant to be lived with and worn in on your own terms. Ivoroid binding, tortoise pickguard, celluloid crown inlays, and a Madagascar rosewood fingerboard round out an instrument that looks unmistakably like a Thorn without ever tipping into flashy.

Then you pick it up. At 7 lbs 8 oz, it hangs comfortably and balances beautifully, and Ron's Fat '59 neck profile (.87–.97") has a satisfying handful without feeling like work. Rolled fretboard edges and 6150 frets on a 12" radius make for a playing experience that just gets out of your way. The 24.658" scale keeps the feel supple under the fingers: easier bends, a slightly softer attack, and the singing sustain you tend to get from that scale on a semi-hollow.

Plugged in, the combination of chambered korina, quilt maple carve, and Ron Ellis Signature humbuckers delivers a voice that's punchy, articulate, and dimensional. Somewhere in ES-335 territory but with more refinement, more headroom, and a more nuanced response to how you play. The push-pull on the neck volume for series/parallel switching gives you a whole additional flavor to work with, useful for cleaner rhythm textures or a tighter, more focused lead voice. And while the appointments suggest restraint, this guitar opens up beautifully through a cranked tube amp, sustaining and staying clear right at the edge of breakup. Whatever you throw at it, it handles with ease.
