C.F. Martin serial number 92854 is this 1945 D-18 -- a great sounding example of a transitional-year dreadnought. What was changing in 1945? Martin was moving away from scallop-braced construction; and, in some cases, they also began using Sitka Spruce for soundboards.

92854 comes to us from the family of its second owner, who owned it and gigged with it in a regional bluegrass band for the last several decades. Its combination of Red Spruce top, tapered braces, and steel T-bar neck construction yield massive volume and punch under a heavy flatpicked attack. And its sweet, open voice has all the clarity and presence one could ever desire in a recording context. It's a supremely versatile guitar, even considering its penchant for a bluegrass player's approach.

The guitar shows the marks of a life well-lived. The structure is original, as are all the internal braces and bridge plate. The soundboard shows several marks left from a previously installed pickup (please see photos). Previous repairs include the gluing and cleating of one top crack and several back cracks (please see our photos). Our shop has just performed a neck reset and re-fret. Current playability is excellent, with action at 3/32" (bass side) and 2/32" (treble side) under tension of medium gauge strings and adequate saddle height for future adjustments. The headstock features an added rose decal, but you already knew that.

This wonderful old D-18 is priced with a generic hardshell case from the modern era. Caltons and TKL Voyagers are available if an upgrade is desired.
