We have known this 1951 Gibson SJ for several years, since the original owner's son brought it into the shop (with his Dad's super-cool 1950's sunburst Kay bass). It wasn't particularly playable at that time (it appeared no work had ever been done to it); but it's had a neck reset & refret and is singing again as it did for all those years in Dad's country band. The sound is pure Gibson ~ warm, balanced, and chimey, with excellent low end focus and the crips clarity that's made a slope-shouldered dreadnought the guitar of choice for rhythm guitarists and songwriters in search of a dry, pure-sounding recording guitar.
Condition? While it's not "never been played before" mint for a vintage guitar, it's certainly amongst the cleaner they come. The tuner buttons have been replaced; and there has been the aforementioned re-fret and neck set. The finish still retains its original luster (with the expected micro checking seen on any 70 year old guitar). And aside from a tiny spot of wear near the treble foot of the bridge, you'd be hard pressed to find any significant signs of usage. For anyone in search of a collectible & great-sounding vintage Gibson SJ, this is the complete package. Priced with very cool period hardshell case.
