Gibson Les Paul SG Junior, Cherry (1963)
Solid Body · P90s Pickups · Vintage
We're quite used to getting some serious rock tones out of old SG Juniors like this, but every now and then one of these guitars will surprise you. No lack of snarl and bite here, though. Just an incredibly open and full sounding original P90 that takes this guitar well beyond its generally perceived capabilities.
This is what we'd consider the last of the true "Les Paul" Juniors, with the signature silkscreen on the headstock that went away the same year this guitar was produced. Though the body is most known as the SG style/shape, these were technically Les Pauls by Gibson's standard. It's a cool transitional feature of one of their most beloved models. This guitar is crack-free and break-free, so we're already starting out ahead of the pack when it comes to vintage SGs. The original Cherry finish has faded out a bit to this reddish brown on the top, with a little more of that red hanging on in the areas where it wasn't subject to UV exposure. Pretty common of Cherry Gibsons, really.
The guitar had its volume and tone pots changed at some point, though the original Sprague "black beauty" capacitor remained. We outfitted it with an original '61 Junior harness and reused the original tone cap to restore it to more of a factory spec configuration. We also installed a MojoAxe CWT-60 "lightning bar" tailpiece that is compensated for an unwound G string, maintaining the look and sound of an original Gibson wraptail bridge.
The original frets were quite worn out when we first acquired the guitar, so we refretted the fingerboard with Jescar 45100 fretwire and installed a new nut. The setup is fantastic and the playability is wonderful.
Condition is Very Good, with typical lacquer checking throughout and various nicks, dings, scratches, and scuffs. One of the reflector knobs is missing its insert but is otherwise functional.
Paired with an aftermarket TKL SG hardshell case.
