Gibson Les Paul Custom, Black (1969)

Gibson closed out their legendary run of guitar production in the 1960s with the reintroduction of the iconic Les Paul in 1968. With the new-issue Standard model featuring P90 pickups and then newly adapted Mini-humbuckers for the model, the Les Paul Custom became the only version to feature full size humbuckers. The Les Paul Custom of 1968-1969 has become one of the most sought after vintage electrics in recent years.

As with many late 60s Gibsons, you're likely to find a combination of transitional features, particularly between the end of 1968 and into the early part of 1969. This Custom is a great example of what we typically identify as a very early '69 build. With its 1-piece mahogany neck, short tenon, and two-piece "pancake" body, it puts production likely in the first few months of '69. By this time, it wouldn't be uncommon to see a 3-piece neck with a 1-piece body, either- a clear sign that Gibson was in a state of true production transition with no hard and fast deadlines! This LP underwent some changes early on in its life, with an old refinish chief among them. Considering its age, it actually presents like a true vintage guitar finish in many ways. Kluson tuners gave way to Schallers at some point along the way as well, as did the witch hat knobs for the earlier style reflector knobs. What's interesting is the presence of chrome plated hardware, which was a very rare option on LP Customs during this period. Given the guitar's history, one could argue that parts just got replaced, but there's a shred of possibility that this guitar was originally outfitted with chrome hardware. All that being said, the guitar has no breaks or structural repairs to speak of.

We refretted the fingerboard with Jescar 45100 fretwire, replacing some pretty worn out original frets. Playability is top notch, and the setup feels great! We also swapped out a faulty toggle switch that likely had worn out due to repeated contact with the case over the years, and that's running nice and smooth.

While T-Tops are generally pretty well regarded, there's something a little extra going on with these pickups in this guitar. Classic LP tones aplenty, but even more of the PAF-like qualities we associate with earlier humbuckers. They sound phenomenal into a clean amp, but handle gain and drive with ease, all while maintaining excellent touch sensitivity.

The original hardshell case is proof of this guitar's working history. It's even got a hole in the top of the case where the toggle switch tip wore through! Still quite functional, we've elected to keep the case paired with the guitar.
