1962 Gibson GA-200 Rhythm King 2x12 combo amplifier just in on consignment!

If you're looking at this amp and saying to yourself "well I don't think I've seen one like this before", you're probably right... in a number of ways. Gibson was famously known for reinventing their amplifier lineup as often as a guitarist might change their strings, so stumbling across some variant of a pre-existing model isn't entirely uncommon. However, when it comes to the more "professional" grade higher output amps of the 50s and 60s, the lower production combined with that ever-changing design mentality could thrust a few rare birds into flight. Case in point with this 1962 GA-200 Rhythm King.

A rarer model in its own rite, the GA-200 was built to compete with Fender's Twin amp of the same period. A larger 2x12 combo aimed at providing unparalleled headroom and volume, the GA-200 was as close to high-powered as you'd find in the late 50s. The model was relatively short-lived, though, and phased out of its V1 production run by 1961. Still, we see evidence of Gibson's business practices as play here, likely finishing off a chassis and cabinet at the turn of 1962, just in the midst of revamping their amplifier lineup... again.

Powered by a pair of 6550 power tubes and cathode biased like many of Gibson's amplifier circuits, the GA-200 gives the feel of a great 50s era amp with the punch and volume of what would start to increase throughout the 60s. For starters, it's an incredibly rich and lively sounding amp, even at lower volumes. But it really does start to come alive with the volume up towards midway. We plugged in an early 60s dot neck 335 with PAFs and couldn't believe how amazing the two paired together!

The tone stack is also unique in these old Gibson amps, with the deceptively basic controls of Treble and Bass providing more than just high and low end, respectively. The Bass control activates a fair bit of low-mid and midrange response when pushed, yielding an impressively robust overdriven tone that has to be heard and felt to be believed. There are some elements of low-power Tweed Twin in there, but tighter, more focused sounding.

Thanks to a great recent servicing which included installation of a pair of Mojotone Anthem 12" speakers and fresh power tubes, this GA-200 breathes some serious firepower! It's an addictively fun amp to plug into despite its volume. Given the price of those old Tweed Twins, a GA-200 is a major steal, too.
