Gibson ES-335TD Walnut (1968)
Semi-Hollow · Vintage
According to the family, this guitar was purchased new by the original owner's parents for his birthday in April of 1968. It would appear that the thought of simply owning a great Gibson ES-335 was enough to justify the ownership, as the guitar presents as an instrument that looks completely unplayed in the near 60 years it's been on this earth. All joking aside, the guitar saw very little play time, but the owner always kept it very well maintained throughout its life. Have you ever seen a Walnut finish so rich and dark?! We haven't! It's got such a great look, especially when paired with such nice sets of laminated Maple. The grain/figure has this sort of waterfall look to it on the top that is mesmerizing. Style points are high on this one.
The neck carve is another surprise here. Although it's got the narrow 1 9/16" nut width, this 335 has a very nice and round medium C carve with a moderate taper that reminds us a little of those '58/'59 necks. The original frets are in such great shape, so playability is spot on.
The original Pat # 'T-Top' pickups sound wonderful, with their characteristic chirpy top end and punchy, warm low end. A tried and true pairing with an old 335, you can access a myriad of great tones out of this guitar.
Not a saddle or strap button or screw out of place on this one, folks. It's as buttoned up and clean as you'll find a late 60s ES-335.
Paired with its original Ess & Ess hardshell case (likely purchased with the guitar new).
