1963 Gibson ES-175D just into the shop on consignment! We consider ourselves pretty lucky these days, as this is one of a handful of incredibly clean and original early 60s ES-175s we've had come through the shop within the past couple of years. Each one has been consistently great sounding, this one included!
This one likely shipped out of the factory in early '63, and features an original and undisturbed pair of PAF humbuckers - about as late as you'll see them in this model. For reference, we've had '62 ES-175s in here with both PAFs and Pat # pickups, so it's definitely rarer to find a '63 with PAFs. Full disclosure: the neck pickup's sticker was bunched up and illegible, so it's technically possible that the pickup is a Pat #. Still, it's mechanically the same pickup in this period. Good news is...the tone will make you forget about that detail.
Sweet, warm humbucker tones just explode out of this guitar with the signature PAF clarity. There's something about these guitars sonically with both pickups engaged that's also addicting - slightly scooped in the midrange with that musical compression that is perfectly forgiving. This is where a great ES-175 transcends conventional jazz applications, easily stepping into a formidable R&B, Blues, and Soul guitar.
The guitar is just so complete and original it's almost startling. ES-175s were often subject to ravaging of their parts due in part to their shared use of those previously mentioned PAFs (knobs, tuners, and wiring harness as well) across much more valuable electrics like Les Pauls, SGs and ES-335s. We'll always celebrate an original survivor like this ES-175!
Paired up with its equally clean Lifton hardshell.
