This 2016 '59 Les Paul reissue brings together the timeless aesthetics and superior craftsmanship that made the original '59 Les Paul an icon.

Sitting down with this gently used 2016 '59 Les Paul Reissue for the first time, we were immediately struck by how loud and open it sounds unplugged. That's the first thing we listen for, and it's a good tell. The great Les Pauls we've played over the years tend to have a little Telecaster snap to them - they're brighter and more open than the model's reputation suggests, with a liveliness you can feel before the guitar is ever plugged in. This R9 has it.

Plugged in, it delivers. There's the Les Paul midrange punch you'd expect - the thick, vocal center that makes the model what it is - but paired with the top-end clarity we were just talking about. Notes have definition and air rather than getting buried in the mids. It's a resonant, open-sounding instrument that holds up clean as well as it does overdriven, which is something not every Les Paul manages (plenty of them are happiest in one mode or the other). This one moves between them comfortably.

The R9 is Gibson Custom Shop's recreation of the 1959 Standard, the most revered year of the model - long-tenon neck joint, hide glue construction, period-correct carve and dimensions, and the kind of attention the Custom Shop reserves for its reissue program. This is a gently used example that has been well cared for.

Inspiring? Absolutely. This is the guitar we'd point a player toward who wants the real '59 experience without waiting on a new build.
