Fender Jazz Bass, Blonde (1974)
Jazz Bass · SS (2 Single Coils) Pickups · Vintage
A "Diamond In The Rough" 70s Jazz Bass that proves you should never overlook these later CBS Era Fenders.
1974 Fender Jazz Bass in original Blonde finish just into the shop!It took all of about 10 seconds for us to realize we had a special bass on our hands when this one came into the shop. Its light weight was instantly noticeable, and the look was undeniable!
This late '74 J features some of the rarer combinations of features you're going to find on a Fender bass from this era. First, it's got the white bound Maple fingerboard with pearl block inlays - what a look! Second, it's got a beautiful Ash body finished in custom color Blonde finish. Combine those with the "foto" tortoise guard often seen on 1974 basses, and you've got one special instrument. The body finish is undoubtedly Blonde, but in typical 70s Fender fashion, someone in final assembly stamped the pickup cavity 'NATURAL'. We're here to assure you that it is definitely not Natural. Finish is original, and very much Blonde!
It came to us with the original pickups shorted out, but original to the instrument with grey bobbin stamps of '7429' denoting the 29th week of '74. We sent them off to Lindy Fralin who rewound them to spec, and they sound phenomenal! Strong output, punchy and clear. Very much in line with later 60s and early 70s J Bass tone.
It had a very nice refret done prior to our acquisition, and our shop did an excellent job of giving it a fresh setup. Despite a couple of extra screw holes from errantly placed original covers, it's a very clean and complete bass. It even comes with its clean and original hardshell case!
We've had a steady flow of impressive 70s Fender basses in here over the last few years, and this one just keeps upping our expectations. It could easily go toe to toe with a 60s bass, making it a serious vintage value.
