Fender 6G12-A Concert Amp (1962)

The Concert pushes the high fidelity character of the late 50s Bassman forward, with the distinct midrange voice of the early 60s brown amps.

The brown 6G12-A Concert model is one of the most underrated mid-powered amps Fender produced, In many ways bridging the gap between the legendary narrow-panel Tweed Bassman and Super Reverb, the Concert provides 40 watts of glorious dual 6L6/5881 power.

It shares its DNA with the Bassman, most notably in the power and output sections. For that reason, the Concert pushes the high fidelity character of the late 50s Bassman forward, with the distinct midrange voice of the early 60s brown amps. The solid state rectifier also tightens up the overall feel, similar in the way the 6G6-A/B Blonde Bassman responds. It also features the incredible harmonic vibrato circuit that has become a fixture in the bigger Brown/Blonde Fenders.

This particular amp found its way to us via the son of its original owner, who purchased the amp new from EU Wurlitzer in Boston, MA. It appears that it had been both lightly used and exceptionally well-preserved, showing very little in the way of true handling wear. You can thank the original Victoria slipcover to some degree, keeping dust and dirt from impregnating the tolex and grill cloth. The amp had never been touched internally since it left the factory, and was still outfitted with the original tubes! We were the first to go back in and check everything out since Leo's team sent it off the assembly line in late 1962. Naturally, it needed the typical servicing all vintage amps require - replacement of the original electrolytic capacitors, a new bias resistor, and a weak power tube (one of the original Tung Sol power tubes is still in there!). The original "death cap" was also removed and a new 3-prong power cord was installed (gray, of course, in keeping with the look of the original gray power cord).

Along with some basic cleaning it was back up and running, sounding as glorious as ever. The original gold frame Oxford 10K5 speakers still sound excellent with very little cone fatigue present. One of the four speakers is strangely missing its magnet cover, but all are undoubtedly true to the original factory foursome, showing date codes c. September and October of 1962. There's some evidence of moisture exposure on the bottom section of the cabinet where some of the tolex lost its adhesion, but the tolex is stable all around.

A small but not insignificant detail? The original brown single-button footswitch is not only included, but works as well! It's responsible for remote actuation of the famed harmonic vibrato, a shining star of early 60s Fender amp circuitry and tone.

Collectors and players alike could welcome this brown beauty to their stable with confidence. We've yet to encounter a brown Fender as clean and complete as this one.
