If we had one City Limits build spec we could hang our collective TME hats on, it would have to be this one...
This new Collings City Limits in Natural is without a doubt one of the coolest builds to come from our favorite Austin, TX builders. Conceptualized - like a few others you may have noticed from us over the years - with the idea of taking some of our favorite 50s and 60s Kalamazoo electrics and giving them this historically quirky mod treatment, this CL brings new meaning to what a highly refined boutique electric is...and isn't. In this case, we deliberately sought out the plainest maple we could. No super flame or figure to be found on this top!
Maple like this is often found underneath Goldtops of the late 60s and occasionally the early/mid 50s. We've encountered our fair share of old Gibsons that were stripped of their finish in the 70s, revealing said tops. And there's a certain charm to the look that we just love. That's where this CL Natural comes in.
Skipping all the modifying, stripping, and DIY brush-on lacquer or varnish or whatever clear finish grandpa had in his garage in 1974, this CL gets a fresh factory clear coat that is slightly aged to give it a bit of that vintage luster. Combined with a faded Walnut finish on the mahogany body, aged nickel hardware, and an amazing sounding set of Throbak P90s, it's a near-perfect intersection of vintage and modern.
This is the very first publicly offered one we've had in the shop. Since introducing this spec, we've pre-sold each one (4 and counting) before it hit the website! If you're a huge fan of Golden Era vintage electrics, but love the feel, sound, and build quality of a Collings, we're not quite sure there's a more fitting CL out there for you.
