Brand spankin' new Collings 290 build in the house!
This 290 features a gorgeous Aged Jet Black finish, 3-Ply Parchment pickguard, and a ridiculous sounding set of Ron Ellis Classic P90s for what has become one of the classiest looking and sonically monstrous solidbodies to arrive from our friends in Austin.
The old "Special" recipe keeps working some 70 years later, but it's the slight refinement in function that makes a big difference in performance of the classic solidbody design. Collings has their process down to a science, without science impacting the soul, feel, and sound of the guitar. Unrivaled fit and finish, precision fretwork, and the combination of MojoAxe tailpiece and Ellis's P90s puts a guitar in your hands that practically plays itself.
The Ellis P90s are relatively new to us in this model, and just like Ron's humbuckers, the harmonic content and clarity elevate the tone of this model to new heights. Yes, this guitar can still rock with the best of them, but it's the quality of the clean tones that jack the versatility up. The sweetness and openness into a clean black panel Fender or equivalent amp is straight up addictive. Plug it into a tweed circuit and all that clarity just pushes the amp right through a mix, with plenty of midrange bite and character coming through to keep things nice and raunchy.
We're in love with this build and this look. Like a great suit, it's a 290 that'll never really go out of style.
