Their roots were in jazz, and their design sensibility reflected it: more influenced by the hi-fi world than the guitar world, with tube complements, gain stages without cathode bypass capacitors, and Baxandall tone controls that had more in common with a quality stereo amplifier than a typical guitar amp. That distinction shaped everything about how their amplifiers sound - and it still does.

That same spirit of independent thinking extended to their engineering. The flip-top combo design remains one of the most elegant and practical solutions in amplifier history. And if you need further evidence of their willingness to go their own way, there is at least one Ampeg model that featured a torsion bar for adjusting the tightness of the speaker baffle. That is not a feature you find anywhere else.
