Fender Telecaster, Sunburst (1968)
T-Style · Single Coils Pickups · Vintage
This is one of those Telecasters that you play for 10 seconds and realize it has "it"... in all the ways.
The Sunburst finish is gorgeous, and it showcases the beautiful grain of the body so well. The neck is even more stunning, with loads of both Birdseye and Flame figure throughout. While looks don't always equate to great tone, we're happy to confirm that this guitar delivers with conviction. Everything you hope to hear in a great 60s Tele is happening with this one, and it seems to have a bit of extra...well...everything.
Albeit slightly microphonic, the bridge pickup is incredible sounding. Big, bright, and clear, with what seems like endless sustain. It's slightly microphonic, too, which undoubtedly contributes to its liveliness. If it's the Buck Owens or Clarence White sound you're after, this '68 can cop that sound with ease.
The neck pickup is smooth and warm sounding, but still does a nice job keeping up with the bridge pickup. It's got a touch more clarity and bounce to its response, and combining both pickups in the middle position shows off just how complementary these pickups are to each other. The guitar has undergone a few small changes over the years,
such as a replaced pickguard, an added (and removed) string tree, replaced nut and refret, and some electronics work (the bridge pickup leads were spliced back at some point). The body and neck finish both remain clean and original with some natural wear throughout. The body also has a rarely seen pencil date in the bridge pickup cavity - 10/66 - which we're a bit puzzled by. However, it appears to be under the finish, so we're inclined to think it's original to the guitar.
It's not every day a Telecaster like this make its way to us. We're thrilled to have this one in our shop!
