Tommy Rodriguez builds Telecasters the way they should have been built the first time - this sunburst double-bound example, with Fralin Blues Specials and old-stock details throughout, makes the case without breaking a sweat.

This build came to us directly from Tommy himself - the customer traded it towards a new build and had originally purchased it directly from Tommy - and it represents something we haven't seen often from the Virginia-based luthier: a more traditional expression of the Telecaster form. Three-tone sunburst with matching sunburst sides, double binding, nitrocellulose lacquer finish, mid-60s inspiration - it's a classically beautiful guitar before you even plug it in.

At 7¼ lbs, the alder body is light and lively, and Tommy's material choices throughout are anything but afterthought. The nut and position dots are old repurposed ivory. The tone cap is old stock .033 oil and paper. Though they may seem minor, these are the sorts of details that separate a guitar built to a spec from a guitar built with intention.

The C neck carve - .90" at the first fret, .97" at the 12th - is comfortable and consistent, the kind of profile that suits a wide range of players without calling attention to itself. A 10" radius Indonesian rosewood fingerboard and medium jumbo frets make for a playing surface that's immediately familiar and easy to work with across the full length of the neck.
A set of Lindy Fralin Blues Specials handles pickup duties, routed through a Callaham Vintage Tele bridge with steel saddles and Gotoh vintage-style tuners. The middle position, with its slight mid scoop and blooming, sparkly response, is particularly satisfying. R&B, Motown, classic country: it covers that ground effortlessly.

Tommy went through this guitar recently and gave it his blessing prior to sending it up to us, and is about as close to a certified pre-owned Rodriguez as you're going to find.

We never pass on the opportunity to put one of Tommy's guitars in someone's hands. This is a good one.
