Putting humbuckers in a Telecaster is an idea that goes back to Fender's own early '70s Thinline, and it has tempted a great many players ever since (us included). The appeal is easy to understand: you keep the slab body, the familiar feel, and the plainspoken look of a T, and you gain a thicker, warmer voice that can sit in places a pair of single coils might not. The challenge is keeping the guitar feeling like a Tele once you get there. The Suhr Alt T gets the balance right through a handful of well-considered choices, and it is a guitar we have been happy to hand to players who want something a little outside the usual.

It starts with the body. Suhr chambers the alder and finishes it with a single f-hole, which takes weight out of the guitar and, in Suhr's words, adds sweetness and warmth to the low end. Pair that with their own humbuckers and you get a T with real depth to it, a guitar that invites you to lean into chords and let them ring (this guitar has impressive amounts of sustain, btw).

The pickups are a pair of Suhr SSV humbuckers, voiced for vintage output with Alnico 5 magnets. Suhr built them to have very little compression, so they respond to your touch more than most buckers: ease off and they clean up, dig in and they push your amp beautifully. The neck pairs vintage warmth with added clarity, and the slightly hotter bridge brings more sustain and a sweet midrange. In a chambered body, chords stay articulate and open. The neck is where Suhr's reputation for playability shows most clearly. It is tinted maple with a 60's C Vintage Medium profile, measuring .830" at the first fret and .950" at the twelfth, topped with an Indian rosewood fingerboard. The 9" to 12" compound radius keeps chording comfortable near the nut and flattens out for bends higher up. Medium stainless steel frets (.055" x .090") will stay smooth and glassy feeling for a very long time, and the 1.650" Tusq nut, Suhr locking tuners with an 18:1 gear ratio, and chopped Classic T bridge round out a guitar built to stay in tune and play the same way every time you pick it up.
