Rodriguez Dottie Prototype Gold Top/Relic 1 of 1 (USED, 2026)
LP-Style · Humbuckers Pickups · Used
An exceptional guitar, period.
Every guitar we get from Virginia-based luthier Thomas Rodriguez makes it a little more obvious that he's one of the best-kept secrets in the electric guitar world. And honestly, he seems to prefer it that way. He lives quietly out in the country, removed from the noise of modern life, focused entirely on building exceptional instruments by hand and living a quiet life. He's also a highly regarded nylon string builder, if you can believe it. That kind of dedication to old-school craftsmanship is what makes his guitars so uniquely inspiring. The Dottie is his take on the "Tele-Paul" concept, that seamless fusion of Telecaster and Les Paul DNA that's had players hooked for a decade and then some. Plenty of builders have had a go at this hybrid, some with excellent results. Thomas's stands apart, and the reason is that his process is pure, traditional, and deeply skilled. No shortcuts, no CNC machines. Just expert hands, time-honored techniques, and an ear for what makes an instrument really sing.
You feel it the second you pick one up. The Dottie is responsive in a way that's tough to put into words until you've played one. Dynamic, loaded with sustain, and carrying that living, breathing quality you only get from guitars built this way. It's the same thing that makes vintage instruments so sought after. They don't just sound good, they feel like part of you while you're playing. It's really amazing stuff.
This Dottie is a Goldtop with black plastics - and is actually the first one Tommy made - and the combination does exactly what you'd hope. Gold is a finish that goes flat and lifeless if the build underneath isn't right, because there's no figure to hide behind and no burst to draw your eye around. Here it just glows. The black pickguard, rings, and switch tip give you that hard, clean contrast against the gold instead of the softer cream look, which is a more direct and slightly meaner version of the same idea. Simple, and it works brilliantly.
The relic work is by Carson Hess, and it's worth calling out because aging a Goldtop is one of the harder jobs in the business. Gold checks, wears, and greens in ways that are unforgiving if you get the sequence wrong, and there's nowhere for a mistake to hide. Carson's work here reads as honest wear rather than applied damage, which is the whole point.
