The A-Type is the first guitar from Powers Electric, the personal project of Andy Powers, who is also president, CEO, and chief guitar designer at Taylor Guitars. It carries the easygoing spirit of Southern California in every detail. Andy grew up around car culture, surf culture, and music, and he set out to build the guitar he had always wanted and never found, one with its own sound, look, and feel. Getting there meant starting with a blank page.

Every part of the A-Type, from the body to the headstock, is made in Andy's own shop. That much handwork keeps production numbers small, and you can see the care in every detail. Here's a closer look at what sets the A-Type apart:

A hollow body with a violin's secret. The slim body is hollow and fully enclosed, with two soundposts inside, much like the soundpost in a violin. They tie the top and back together so both move as one, adding resonance and sustain while keeping feedback in check.

Knobs born from surf culture. The colorful knobs and trem arm cap are shop-made from layered resin, a material that started out as a byproduct of glassing surfboards. The layers come out differently every time, so no two knobs look alike.

The CamTail. Andy's camshaft tailpiece, or CamTail, is machined in-house and compensates for the characteristics of each string, so the strings stay in tune with one another as the pitch moves. A built-in lock returns the vibrato to pitch and lets you bend notes without the other strings drooping flat. If you prefer a fully floating vibrato, a simple adjustment gets you there.

PF42 pickups. Andy's own pickup design uses a "partial Faraday" cage made with 42-gauge wire.

A split fingerboard radius. The fingerboard radius is asymmetrical, slightly flatter on the treble side, so string bends feel easier and sound better.
