Designed by Andy Powers of Taylor Guitars, the A-Type is a fresh, modern take on electric guitar design, heavily influenced by Southern California’s rich culture.

Since its debut in June 2023, the Powers Electric A-Type has captured the attention of the guitar community. Created by Andy Powers—renowned for his work at Taylor Guitars—the A-Type is a bold reimagination of what an electric guitar can be. Drawing inspiration from Southern California’s vibrant culture, this guitar seamlessly blends the worlds of hotrod car culture and the free-spirited energy of surf and skate culture.

From the moment you lay eyes on an A-Type, its distinct character is pretty undeniable. Most models boast finishes inspired by Porsche’s iconic paint colors (there are also flame/quilt top models in the lineup), while the innovative Camtail tremolo evokes the sleek styling of a custom hotrod. Custom knobs, a uniquely designed switch tip, and a tremolo bar tip—each a subtle nod to surf culture—make it clear that this instrument is anything but ordinary. The compound radius fingerboard, influenced by surfboard design, ensures fluid, effortless playability. It's unique design shifts the compound radius from the typical horizontal orientation - meaning the board flattens out as you play higher up the neck - to vertical. Which is to say, the board is a little rounder under the E, A, and D strings and gets flatter under the G, B, and high E strings.

But the A-Type isn't just about aesthetics—it’s a high-performance machine at heart. Having spent ample time with these guitars, we can confidently say they deliver an exceptional playing experience. The neck is instantly inviting, with a natural feel that encourages expressive playing. Sonically, the in-house designed pickups provide a rich, dynamic response—from warm, articulate cleans to thick, harmonically rich overdrive. The way it compresses and sustains makes the A-Type feel like an extension of the player’s hands.

Much like a finely tuned sports car, the A-Type is engineered for agility, power, and precision. It balances tradition with cutting-edge innovation, offering players an instrument that exceeds expectations at every turn. Whether you're chasing glassy clean tones or pushing into saturated overdrive, the A-Type proves its worth again and again.
