Gil Yaron’s take on the slab board era, with a Brazilian rosewood fingerboard and pickups wound in his own shop.

Gil Yaron came to building through vintage repair, working on pre-CBS Fenders and golden-era Gibsons in Los Angeles through the 1990s until restoration jobs turned into partial builds and partial builds turned into complete instruments. Before he ever offered a replica for sale, he spent years gathering original paperwork, photographs, tools and instruments so that his guitars would come out of the same methods as the ones they honor, and that groundwork is a big reason his name carries the weight it does among players who know the originals well.

Known for his incredibly accurate Gibson replicas, his Early ’60s S-Style follows a similar path with the guitars Fender was making in the slab board years, when a thick, flat-bottomed piece of Brazilian rosewood sat on the maple neck and the three-pickup, vibrato-equipped design had settled into the form most of us picture when we think of that instrument.

Gil built this example with a slab Brazilian rosewood fingerboard (a meaningful part of the recipe, since there is simply more rosewood in the neck than on the curved boards that followed partway through 1962, and many players hear that as a little extra warmth and roundness sitting underneath the bell-like single coil voice), a reclaimed/100 year old maple neck, Yaron-wound single coils, vintage style plastics (guard, pickup covers), and a Callaham Vintage/Narrow bridge.

This example - which is astoundingly great, it should be noted - was built about 5 years ago and is finished in a classic sunburst over a featherweight alder body, with a '62 C-shaped (.85-.96") neck carrying that slab board and a set of Gil’s own single coil pickups, which he winds himself for his bolt-neck guitars. It weighs just 7lbs 1oz, shows little if any wear beyond Gil's ultra aged relic work.

Looking for your one and only Strat? This could easily be it. After giving it a fresh setup, our tech remarked that this might be one of the best replic-style builds that's crossed his bench. Given the guitars he's seen? That's saying something - and we completely agree.
