A true time capsule Fender bass from one of the very best years of the model's production

1961 Fender Jazz Bass in original Sunburst finish just into the shop!

Wow. Wow. WOW. We just don't find 'em like this, folks!

This stunning '61 Jazz Bass is so complete and so untouched (it even came in with what we believe to be its original flatwound strings), that it almost shocks your nervous system. Small parts and pieces that so often get lost to time are here, and the critical elements of these tremendous basses remain 100% as it did when it left the factory 65 years ago. It's astonishing, really.

Completed in September 1961, this Jazz Bass features the highly desirable slab Rosewood fingerboard and the darker, more closed in 3-Tone Sunburst often found in this production year. Interestingly, the pencil date on the neck shows '9-61' and the body date shows '9-60', though it's very obvious that it's a '61. The model had also just recently been updated in the electronics department, moving from the "stack knob" setup to the independent volume controls with master tone control that would remain a permanent fixture for the model. The entire harness is completely undisturbed. Interestingly, the bass includes an original catalogue that advertised the stack knob variant!

The original black bobbin pickups retain their original winds and sound wonderful, with a warm but defined tone. The slab Rosewood board seems to impart some roundness to the response too, though the fundamental is still nice and strong. The original mute springs remain, even with their original felt pads!

The neck is classic early 60s in profile, with a slender Oval C carve and meaty taper. The original frets are in nice shape as well, and the overall feel of the bass is great.

Whether you're a collector or a bassist who lives and breathes vintage, it's hard to overlook just how incredible this instrument is. It's the most complete vintage Fender Jazz bass we've ever had.
