This newest Collings I-30 LC is most certainly the most vintage-inspired build to date. We went for equal parts Epiphone Casino and Epiphone Sheraton here, pulling in the gold hardware look from the supremely rare natural-finished Sheratons of the early 60s with the black P90 covered look from the earliest of Casinos circa 1961-1962. We'd say that Collings hit the mark, and then some.
The lightest electric build offered by the the folks in Austin, TX, the I-30 is perhaps the most acoustically-charged electric of the bunch. With its slightly smaller 15" fully hollow trestle-braced laminated Maple body and trapeze tailpiece, it provides an impressive amount of acoustic volume and presence while adding a slightly more crisp note definition and punch. Touch-sensitivity doesn't begin to describe just how these I-30s behave - delicate fingerstyle or flatpicking delivers a very sweet, round tonality, and a heavier handed approach will get the growl going at a remarkable clip. It's no surprise that these guitars excel in jazz and blues just as they do in a rock-based context, especially with the Throbak 52/54 P90 pickups.
What can we say? This I-30 has a look like no other I-30 we've seen, and a sound that firmly plants these guitars at the top of the list of anyone looking for a thinline hollowbody electric.
