We love a good vintage Firebird. Nothing sounds quite like them. But they can be a bit of a bear to play sometimes. So why not take some amazing sounding Firebird-esque pickups and work them into the "Special" formula of a 290?! Well that's what Collings has done for us, and we are totally blown away by the results.

The Aged Jet Black finish and all-Black plastics make for one mean looking 290. It gives a little bit of that vintage hot rod vibe in a way, where we might see an old Junior/Special refinished and modified over the years. The best part, though, is it's all factory and super high quality in terms of fit, finish, and build. It's also super light, weighing in just a tick under 7lbs. While it might look a little more punk rock, the Righteous Sound Bluebird pickups cover an impressive amount of tonal ground that goes far beyond that aforementioned genre. They have this beautiful clarity and chime without being too aggressive in the trebles, making them perfect for clean jazz and blues tones. But get some gain behind them and watch out - fat, punchy, and distinctively clear but never harsh. These pickups combine with the all-Mahogany construction of the 290 to yield something quite unique, even for a model that's been in production some 20 years.
