Small amps can sometimes be full of compromises - the Trail Rider is not built like one. Carr put a single EL84 at the output, hand wired the whole circuit point to point in Pittsboro, NC, and then spent the parts budget where it shows: US-made custom transformers, Jupiter signal caps, NOS carbon comp resistors, a Celestion A-Type, and a 17-inch MOD spring tank driven by its own 12DW7. Five watts, 29 pounds in the 1x12 combo (also available as a head).

What makes it more than a small combo is the voice toggle. Two tone stacks, two decades, one amp.

By the mid-fifties a single Tone control was no longer enough for the way people were playing. Fender's answer, arriving in the pro-level Fullerton amps just before 1957, was to split the job: Treble carried over the old Tone function, Bass added a low-end volume and low-pass filter. It lasted only a few years before the Treble-Middle-Bass stack we all use now took over, which is part of why it sounds the way it does. The range is wide and slightly ornery. Turn the Bass up and the Treble down and it gets woolly and dark in a way modern circuits will not do. Go the other direction and it turns astringent and cutting. Everything between is usable, and pushed, it moves from a soft clean into thick, chewy overdrive.

V67

The British answer came later and went the other way. Mid-sixties players wanted cut and top end, something that would sit above a band instead of under it. Top Boost, reportedly derived from some unusual American designs of the previous decade, delivered a scooped midrange and an aggressive top. That is the V67 setting: chime at low volume, grind when you lean on it, and enough presence to hold its own against a loud room.

Practical notes

The attenuator is the reason this amp works at home. Full power is five watts, which is already a live-in-a-small-room number, and the attenuator pulls it down past one watt to a whisper without collapsing the tone. That means the power tube can be working hard at a volume that will not get you a phone call from a neighbor. In a studio, it is a microphone-friendly amp at any setting. In a live venue, plan on a mic and a monitor, which is how most engineers prefer a small amp anyway.

Controls are Volume, Treble, Bass, Reverb, and Attenuator, plus the voice toggle. Nothing hidden, nothing that needs a manual.
