Gibson SG Special, Polaris White 72834 (1962)
Solid Body · P90s Pickups · Vintage
Polaris White SGs are just some of the coolest looking electrics Gibson put out in the 1960s. This opaque, milky white finish looks amazing against the stark black plastics of the P90 covers, wide bevel pickguard, reflector knobs, and dark Brazilian Rosewood fingerboard.
While there's evidence to suggest Polaris White may have debuted the year prior, it's 1962 that we see this finish start to show up more regularly as an option to the standard Cherry finish. Similar to the TV finishes of the 1950s, Polaris White finished electrics also shipped in smaller numbers compared to their standard finish counterparts, making them a touch rarer. Either way, we've got a fantastic sounding and playing SG Special that's almost entirely original, save for a recent refret, replaced nut, and high quality aftermarket bridge by Music City Bridge. Though the original lightning bar wraparound tailpiece comes with the guitar, the MCB bridge offers superior intonation and tuning stability.
The original P90 pickups measure in the mid/high 7k range and sound beautiful on their own but especially together. The original Centralab harness is fully intact and undisturbed, with pot codes that date to mid January 1962. Fat and rich, but chimey and clear, they have an unmistakable sound that makes this SG a great go-to for all types of music.
We'd consider this SG Special very clean for its age, and well maintained at that. There is one small fissure where the neck heel meets the body on the rear treble side, suggesting that the guitar took some sort of minor bump along the way. Good news is it's very stable, with no movement or seam large enough to even consider attempting a repair or glue injection.
The guitar is paired with a clean 1970s Gibson SG chipboard case with the red plush lining, a certain step up from the unlined chipboard cases of the 50s and early 60s.
