Triggs New Yorker Natural (USED, 2005)

A masterbuilt archtop from one of the great American luthiers, as beautiful to play as it is to look at.

There are archtops, and then there are archtops built by people who've spent their careers obsessing over the real ones. Jim Triggs is firmly in the second category. Before building under his own name, he spent six years at Gibson's Custom Shop in the late '80s and early '90s, where he was largely responsible for reviving the company's archtop program - signing off on over 700 instruments and building some of the most celebrated pieces of that era himself. When he left in 1992 to build on his own, he took all of that knowledge with him.

The New Yorker is Triggs' tribute to John D'Angelico's most celebrated design, and it wears that lineage proudly. The art deco stairstep tailpiece, the distinctive headstock shape and finial, the split-block fingerboard inlays - it's all here, rendered with the kind of fit and finish that only comes from someone who truly understands what made the originals great. The natural finish lets the quilted maple back and sides speak for themselves, and on this example, they have plenty to say. Quilted maple at this level has a three-dimensional depth that's hard to convey in photos - it really needs to be seen in person. Tonally, this guitar delivers what a great archtop should: a dry, woody fundamental with plenty of projection and that characteristic bloom when you really dig in. The carved spruce top and maple construction give it excellent note separation and clarity across the full range - chords ring with definition rather than mush, and single lines have a focused, singing quality that sits beautifully in a mix. The pickup makes it a genuine working musician's instrument, equally at home on a quiet jazz gig or a recording session where you need that warm, resonant archtop voice without fighting feedback.

At 21 years old, this guitar has had time to open up and settle in, and it shows. Instruments like this don't come along often.
