1966 Gibson SG Special in original Cherry finish!
"First Of The Large Guards" sounds like some sort of Game Of Thrones offshoot, doesn't it? Well, this is kind of what we're looking at here. One could argue that an SG has a bit of that warrior or guardsman look about it; with its sleek body bevels and double horns, it certainly commands that kind of attention!
All jokes and tv show references aside, this '66 looks to be one of the earlier examples of Gibson's "SG 2.0", with its distinctive larger pickguard and more extended neck joint. Still, it retains the wider body bevels that give it a signature look that most definitely cannot be confused with any other electric guitar model of its time. While the serial number might suggest earlier production, there's no denying the specs on this one.
This twin P90 "Special" has a punchy, fat tonality with a top end cut that great 60s SGs tend to have. The Slim C neck has a chunky taper - like many Gibson electrics from this period - but with the narrower nut feels supremely comfortable and still plays quite fast.
The Cherry finish has faded a bit into Brown, but is original throughout. There's no evidence of headstock or heel breaks with the guitar, either. The electronics look to have been lightly touched up with some non-original solder on a couple of joints, but the wiring itself is original and intact, with CTS pots that date to 1964. Original reflector knobs remain. The original "lightning bar" wraparound bridge is long gone, replaced by the great MusicCity Savvy bridge in aged nickel. The original short vibrola tailpiece is included, though.
The guitar is set up with nice, comfortable action and a touch of relief. It plays very well (the prior owner is a professional musician and had this guitar dialed in very nicely) and sounds superb!
Accompanied with its seemingly original (or period-correct) Gibson SG hardshell case.
