1965 Gibson SG Special in Cherry finish just into the shop!
This is just a fantastic sounding, playing, and looking SG. Likely finished off in the early part of 1965, it retains the wider 1 11/16" nut width (1.66" to be exact) along with the small pickguard and nickel plated hardware.
The original P90 pickups are punchy and fat sounding with great output, and they're incredible responsive thanks to the acoustic liveliness and resonance of the guitar. This is such a fun guitar to play unplugged!
One of the more interesting features of this guitar is its pickguard. It appears that it's cut from 50s rolled plastic, identified by striations in the plastic most often associated with pickguards and truss rod covers from the 1950s. It's quite possible that a leftover piece of material was found and then subsequently used on this build. Either way, it's a unique element to this guitar, and we love seeing it!
The guitar has just undergone a refret in-house and it's playing superbly! It shows evidence of some old overspray on the back of the neck, but no signs of any breakage or damage under blacklight. One of the pots was replaced with the same spec CTS pot, but the rest of the harness presents as original to the guitar. We replaced the original lightning bar wraparound bridge with a MojoAxe CWT-60 which is compensated for a plain G. The setup/playability is spot on!
A vintage twin P90 Gibson electric has to be one of the most inspiring electrics out there - one strum of this '65 and we think you'll agree.
