A masterfully crafted '66 Strat by David Brown, this Masterbuilt model blends the soul of a single-luthier instrument with the pedigree and precision of the Fender Custom Shop.

One question we hear often is: what’s the difference between Fender Custom Shop Team Built and Masterbuilt instruments? It’s a great question, and one worth digging into.

Team Built guitars are expertly crafted by small groups of skilled builders within the Custom Shop, yielding consistently excellent guitars that have a certain feel. When you step into the Masterbuilt realm, you’re essentially entering the single-luthier world. That means one masterbuilder - start to finish - brings the entire instrument to life. Each build reflects that individual’s experience, taste, and hands-on approach - and while hard to quantify - there's a noticeable feel difference that we've seen with other single-luthier instruments. These instruments seem to embody that one person's blood, sweat, and tears as the expression goes, and you can feel it. It's a vibe thing.

This '66 Stratocaster comes from the bench of David Brown, and it’s a stellar example of what sets a Masterbuilt Fender apart. The feel thing we were talking about is immediately apparent when you pick the guitar up - a perfectly shaped neck with smooth rolled edges and immaculate fretwork helping set the stage. The profile hits that sweet mid-’60s taper, and as with other guitars we’ve had from Dave, there's a touch of that Lentz-like finesse in how it plays and vibrates - refined, responsive, and effortlessly musical.

Acoustically, it’s loud, bright, and full of snap, just what you want to hear before you even plug in. Once you do, the Josefina-wound pickups shine with classic Strat character: glassy top end, lush sparkle, and those sweetly compressed 2 & 4 positions that make rhythm playing feel just right.

For players curious about the world of single-luthier builds - but not ready to leave iconic brands behind - this strikes the perfect balance. Boutique feel, Fender pedigree, and a Strat worthy of long-term love
