Fender Custom Shop LTD 70th Broadcaster Journeyman Relic (USED, 2022)
T-Style · Single Coils Pickups · Used
The Custom Shop’s 2020-only tribute to the guitar that became the Telecaster, in Journeyman Relic Nocaster Blonde with blend wiring and a 1950 “U” neck.
Fender introduced the Broadcaster in the fall of 1950, and within months a telegram from Gretsch, who held the Broadkaster trademark, brought the name to an end. For a while Fender simply clipped the word off the headstock decal, which gave us the Nocaster, and then the guitar became the Telecaster. Fender puts the original Broadcaster run at around 250 instruments. Everything we now call a blackguard starts there. For 2020 only, the Fender Custom Shop built a limited edition to mark the guitar’s 70th anniversary, and the spec sheet shows how closely they studied the originals. The body is two-piece select ash with an off-center seam, finished in a flash coat of Nocaster Blonde lacquer. The neck is one-piece rift-sawn maple carved to the 1950 Broadcaster “U” profile, a full handful in the early-’50s way, with 21 medium vintage frets. The 7.25" to 9.5" compound radius keeps the vintage feel down by the nut and gives bends more room as you move up.
The pickups are Custom Shop hand-wound ‘50-‘51 Blackguards, and the wiring follows the early scheme. The second knob is a blender pot, and the neck position has a slightly brighter rhythm setting than the originals had. If you have only played Telecasters with modern wiring, the blend circuit deserves some time. It lets you mix the two pickups by degree, and it gets you to sounds a standard three-way switch does not offer. The bridge is the three-saddle ‘50 Broadcaster style with brass saddles.
Ours is the Journeyman Relic, the lightest of the three relic treatments offered on this run. Think of a guitar that has been played for years and looked after the whole time: finish checking, a few small dings, and a neck that already feels familiar. A fantastic Tele - um, Broadcaster - by any measure. This is a great one folks.
