1964 Epiphone Coronet in original Silver Fox finish just into the shop!
Silver Fox. Where do we ever begin?! This amazing variation of the famous TV finish was found exclusively on Gibson-made Epiphone solidbody electrics beginning in the early/mid 60s. It's since become one of the most popular finishes in the vintage guitar world, and often featured on many boutique electrics and even brought back by Gibson's Custom Shop. We're HUGE fans of original Silver Fox Epiphones!
Now we're going to ignore the finish for a minute (hard to do, we know), and just focus on how incredible of a player this guitar is...
Picking this guitar up out of its case for the first time will have you looking for the helium chambers inside the body. It's freakishly lightweight - a true featherweight - coming in at just 5lb 3oz on our scale. For reference, the last Coronet we had from this period was a nice lightweight example and it was a over a pound heavier - crazy!
The lightness of build combined with a slightly lower wind P90 pickup yields an almost Esquire-like snap and clarity. Even so, the midrange response is more balanced, and hitting this Coronet with some gain will give up those great raunchy Jr tones with ease.
The guitar suffered a relatively minor headstock crack at some point in its life, and came to us solid and stable, needing no further attention. The original frets have been dressed in-house and while slightly on the lower side, still feel very comfortable to play. The neck carve is wonderful - a nice rounded slim C that has a chunky taper. A compensated bridge has been installed along with a pair of Music City locking studs to keep the coupling nice and tight. The electronics are original and untouched.
Priced with an aftermarket rectangular hardshell case.
