Collings I-35LC Caramel (USED, 2024)

Think 335, refined.

If you've spent any real time chasing the 335 sound, you know how narrow the target is. Too much air in the body and the guitar gets loose and squirrelly before you've dialed in anything useful. Too much center block and you've built a heavy solidbody with f-holes cut into it. Landing in the middle takes a builder who knows exactly what they're aiming at, and Collings has been hitting that mark as consistently as anyone in the business. The I-35LC is, to our ears, one of the finest 335-style guitars being made right now.

This one features their beautiful Caramel finish, and it's a beauty. Warmer and more transparent than the sunbursts you usually see on this platform, with an amber glow through the middle that lets the figure in the maple laminate come forward rather than getting buried under color. It has the look of a guitar that's been loved for thirty years, straight out of the case.

The smaller body of the I-35LC is one of the things that wins people over fastest (it's a 15" wide body vs the standard 16" wide body of a 335). Sitting down with it, it takes about a minute to realize how much easier it is to live with than a full-size 335. Less bulk under your forearm, better balance on a strap, and none of the sense that you're wrestling something. It's the kind of comfort that shows up three hours into a session, when you notice you're still playing as well as when you started.

Then there's the build quality. We've had a ton of Collings instruments through this shop over the years and the consistency is remarkable. Clean fretwork, tight joinery, and a level of finish work that holds up to however close you want to look. The Austin shop has kept that standard going, and you feel it the moment you pick one up.

Played acoustically, this guitar is lively and resonant, which is always the tell when you're checking it out prior to plugging in. The Lollar low-wind Imperial humbuckers are a perfect match for it. Cleans come through open and dimensional with real air around every note, and when you push into overdrive the guitar gets fat and vocal without the low end getting soupy. That mix of bite, warmth, and openness is exactly why so many working players reach for a semi-hollow before anything else on the wall.
