Origin Effects EQ Deluxe Studio Equaliser & Drive

The Origin Effects EQDELUXE is an all-analogue EQ and drive based on the Pultec EQP-1A. Three bands, the Pultec low-end trick, and push-pull saturation for bass and guitar.

Most EQ pedals are tools. You buy one because something in your rig needs fixing, and you leave it off until it does. The EQDELUXE is a different proposition, and it comes by that honestly, because it's modeled on a piece of gear nobody ever described as a utility.

The Pultec EQP-1A is a passive tube equalizer from the 1950s that ended up in essentially every serious studio on earth, and it earned that spot not by being surgical but by being flattering. Engineers patch a Pultec in and leave it in, sometimes with the controls barely moved, because the unit itself does something to the signal on the way through. Origin Effects has spent a decade building pedals that chase studio-rack behavior rather than pedal behavior, and this is the most literal expression of that yet.

Two things carry it. The first is the low-end trick, which is the Pultec's famous party piece: boost and cut the same low frequency band at once, and instead of cancelling out you get a curve with real weight underneath and a cleaned-up spot just above it. Bass gets bigger without getting muddy, which is a combination that shouldn't work and does. On guitar it thickens up a thin single-coil rig without the woolly low mids you'd normally trade for that.

The second is the output stage. The original Pultec runs a push-pull valve makeup amp after the EQ section, and a good chunk of the "just plug through it" reputation comes from that stage rather than the filters. Origin recreated it in solid state, which gives you a controlled saturation that gets richer as you push it. This is where the pedal stops being an EQ and starts being something you leave on.

The rest is well chosen. The mid band is inductor-based with frequencies picked specifically for bass and guitar rather than borrowed from a mixing desk. The high band is voiced toward warmth, with a broad attenuation range for taking the edge off a bright amp or a hot bridge pickup. Nothing here goes ugly at the extremes, which is not something you can say about most EQ pedals.

High-headroom circuitry means it plays nicely with line level, so it works in front of an interface or in a console insert as easily as it does on a pedalboard. That flexibility is real, not marketing. Designed and built in England, buffered bypass, premium parts throughout.
