We've become accustomed to Collings unveiling a few special flattops at the now-annual Fretboard Summit in Chicago. And one of this year's showpieces was this 001 Maple which re-introduces Cedar as a soundboard option on their flattops.
It's cliche to say this is a great-sounding guitar, so let's consider instead who it would suit best. Cedar is relatively soft compared to Spruce: what it lacks in dynamic range, it makes up for in warmth. For a fingerstyle guitarist who plays with a sensitive attack and usually finds a Collings flattop a bit on the bright side, this guitar would make perfect sense. The Maple body ensures plenty of presence and clarity; but for the fingerpicker who wants warmth and projection even with minimal right-hand input, this 001 is a fantastic choice.
Other notable features include an abalone rosette, and 1 3/4" nut width. Price includes hardshell case.
